What is mathematics?

Mathematics is the study of numbers and how they can be used and manipulated to build new knowledge i.e. pure mathematics or to take advantage of opportunities in the real world i.e. applied mathematics. Mathematics is broken up into many areas such as algebra, measurement, geometry, probability, statistics, calculus and more.

What is numeracy?

Numeracy is the ability to use numbers day to day. It involves the ability to identify errors in decision making and to use and manipulate numbers to plan and organise your activities. From balancing a bank account to understanding how much air pressure to fill your car tyres with, numeracy is the skill of using numbers to lead a happy, organised and productive life.
