Definition of Response to Intervention
John Hattie’s concept of Response to Intervention (RTI) emphasises a systematic, evidence-based approach to identifying and supporting students who are struggling academically or behaviourally. In Hattie’s Visible Learning research, RTI is shown to have a significant positive effect on student achievement by using early assessment, targeted interventions, and continuous monitoring of progress. RTI typically follows a tiered model, where all students receive high-quality instruction (Tier 1), additional small-group support is provided to those who need it (Tier 2), and intensive individualized intervention is given for persistent difficulties (Tier 3). Hattie highlights that RTI is most effective when schools focus on timely identification, teacher collaboration, and consistent evaluation of instructional strategies, ensuring no student “falls through the cracks.”
