Definition of Conceptual Change Programs

John Hattie’s Conceptual Change Programs are instructional approaches aimed at helping students replace deeply held misconceptions with scientifically accurate understanding, particularly in subjects like science and mathematics. Rather than simply presenting new information, these programs challenge students’ prior knowledge by confronting incorrect ideas through cognitive conflict, dialogue, and evidence-based reasoning. Hattie’s meta-analyses have shown that conceptual change programs have a high effect size (0.99), making them one of the most effective teaching strategies for enhancing learning outcomes. They encourage deeper thinking and understanding by promoting active engagement and reflection, rather than passive absorption of facts. These programs are especially effective when teachers are aware of common misconceptions and deliberately design instruction to correct them.
